Fun Facts About Inside Out 1 & 2

  • In the original Inside Out, Anger was supposed to have a “steam room” where he could let off steam when he got too upset and lost his temper. While that scene was ultimately cut, the door that was supposed to lead to the steam room is in Inside Out 2—it’s the door the new emotions come through when they’re introduced!
  • Originally, the writers of Inside Out planned for as many as 27 different emotions to be characters in the movie (because, understandably, humans have a lot of emotions). However, they ended up cutting back to 5 emotions—and then added more (Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Nostalgia) in the sequel.
  • Speaking of the new emotions added in Inside Out 2, a number of other contenders were considered! Along with the 5 additions that appear in the movie, emotions like Awe, Guilt, Jealousy, Schadenfreude, and Shame nearly appeared too.
  • Long Term Memory (the labyrinth of memories in Riley’s mind) is supposed to be huge. In fact, Inside Out’s filmmakers envisioned it to be about the size of the island of Taiwan, which is around 14,000 square miles!
  • One of the ideas for new areas in Riley’s mind in Inside Out 2 was “Procrastination Land,” an area with the motto “Always under construction.” It was supposed to feature construction workers asking if they should get started soon, checking their phones, and not actually doing anything. According to director Kelsey Mann, it has to be cut because it didn’t contribute to the movement of the film’s story.
  • When Maya Hawke (the voice of Anxiety) auditioned, the movie’s director (Mann) was on vacation at Disney World! While there, Mann was brought to a Disney office behind EPCOT’s Mexico area to talk to Hawke via Zoom, and he loved her audition so much that he was just about moved to tears. He called producer Mark Nielsen right after, saying, “Oh my god, she’s perfect.”
  • Inside Out 2’s main character, Riley, is more authentic than you might realize. That’s because she was shaped using feedback from Riley’s Crew: a team of teenage girls aged 13 to 19. Riley’s Crew would give notes on the movie (and Riley as a character) every few months as it developed to make sure Riley and her friends really felt like teenagers!
