Why is my Raypak pool heater not heating? ›

Go make sure there aren't any tripped circuit breakers in the fuse box, then check that the unit's time clock is set to the “On” position. Check Filters & Strainers: Problems with slow or inefficient heating, as well as overly noisy operation, can sometimes be traced back to dirty filters and strainers.

If you do have a spark, but the pilot doesn't light, a good bet is that you have a plugged pilot assembly or a bad gas valve.

Usually, there is a water bypass valve right at the heater's intake that allows water flow to go around the heater instead of through it. We don't need heat during the summers (and most other parts of the year in Florida), so water bypasses the heater most of the time.

The flame rollout switch is a safety feature that shuts off the gas supply to the burner if the flame blows out. This can happen for several reasons, such as a dirty burner or a blocked flue. A flame rollout can also be caused by a faulty gas valve or a problem with the electrical igniter.

The rollout switch is activated when something like wind causes the flames to shoot out towards the front of the unit. This is usually caused by high winds while the unit is running.

Often you need to replace a few essential parts, not the entire heater. Things like your climate, water chemistry, and maintenance habits will impact the lifespan of your pool heater. Pool heaters will last anywhere from 10 to 25 years.

Your heater may have inadequate water flow due to a dirty filter, closed valve, external bypass, reversed water connections, or pressure switch out of adjustment. It is also possible that your thermostat is out of calibration or needs to be replaced.

Reset your pool heater by flipping the breaker switch in the electrical panel to “off” and then “on.” Your breaker may be located in a disconnect box near your pool heater or in the breaker panel in your home.

In many cases, the reason that you can't get your pilot light to ignite is that the pilot tube is clogged. This is a small metal tube that supplies the gas needed to ignite the pilot and keep it lit. The pilot tube often becomes clogged with debris, and this will prevent gas from flowing to the pilot light.

Clogged filters and strainers—unobstructed flow is required for proper temperature monitoring. High temperature setting—setting the pool heater to more than 105°F is an easy way to cause temperature excesses and lockouts.

Why does my pool heater say no water flow? ›

The most common reason for low or no flow is that the baskets are full of debris. By checking and emptying both the skimmer basket (by the pool) and the pump basket (inside the pump) will free up the water flow, allowing the system to fully 'prime' and function at full capacity.
