This Bread Machine Pizza Dough recipe is near and dear to my heart because much like slow cooker recipes, it requires very little work 🙂 If you don’t have a bread machine you may want to consider buying one because they are a HUGE time saver and there is no limit to the number of recipes you can make. This recipe makes 1 pizza so I usually double it so we can have leftovers. It also make fabulous bread sticks so there is also that option. We really enjoy this pizza dough recipe and I know you will too!

Turn your bread machine to the dough setting and let ‘er go! After a couple minutes check on your dough. Make sure that the ingredients are thoroughly combined and that the dough is not too wet or too dry. Depending on where you live and the flour you use there can be some variances in the dough. If it’s too dry, add 1 tsp of water at a time. If the dough is too sticky, add 1 tsp of flour at a time.

I like to lightly grease my pizza pan and dust with cornmeal. Make up your pizza and bake at 400-425 degrees for 18-25 minutes. You are looking for bubbly cheese and lightly browned crust. If you like acrunchier crust, brush some olive oil on the crust before baking.

FAQs

Why is bread machine flour the best for making pizza crust? ›

Bread Flour

It's easy to find in any grocery store (again, King Arthur Flour is a favorite brand), is affordable, and adds some extra oomph and crispiness to thin crust and New York-style pizzas. It will make your crust crispy on the outside and chewy and textured on the inside.

Can you use bread dough to make pizza? ›

Yes, you can, pizza crust is bread after all. You'll notice a difference in its texture though. The bread dough will produce a crust with a tighter crumb that be as light and airy as the one made by your local pizza parlor. It'll be like, well, bread.

What is the minimum amount of time to let pizza dough rise? ›

Tips For Making Pizza Dough

Plan on at least 1 1/2 hours of rise time before shaping, topping, and baking. Get your oven as hot as it will go — at least 500°F. Keep the toppings basic.

How long is dough cycle on bread machine? ›

It usually takes about an hour and a half total, and it's tremendously useful for any yeasted dough, including both scratch recipes and baking mixes. For example, to make Soft Dinner Rolls from a mix, simply combine all the ingredients in your bread machine and select the Dough cycle.

What happens if you use bread flour for pizza dough? ›

Higher protein content means higher gluten content, as we now know, so using bread flour in your pizza dough will result in a stretchy dough that's less likely to tear. You get a very chewier, more bread-like pizza crust when you make your dough with bread flour.

Why is Italian pizza dough so good? ›

The Italian pizza crust is thin but perfectly balanced. It's not too crunchy and made with wheat flour and olive oil. Sometimes they may add herbs to the dough as well as the sauce. Many people don't know this, but there's a chance they may have never tried Italian pizza, even if they've eaten pizza a hundred times.

Can you let pizza dough rise too long? ›

Pizza dough that has been left to rise for too long, or has been over-proofed, can potentially collapse. The gluten becomes overly relaxed, and the end product will be gummy or crumbly instead of crisp and fluffy.

What flour is best for pizza dough? ›

The best flour for making Deep-Dish Pizza Dough is all-purpose flour. In bakeries and pizzerias, Pizza Flour is often used because it is a high-protein flour that produces a light and airy crust. However, all-purpose flour will also work well for Deep-Dish Pizza Dough.

What is 00 flour in USA? ›

Most “00” flour that we see in the United States is ground from durum wheat and has a mid-range protein content of about 11 to 12%, similar to all-purpose white flour.

What happens if too much yeast in pizza dough? ›

Too little yeast and your dough won't rise enough, and the pizza base will taste bland. Use too much yeast and your dough may over-ferment. Tell-tale signs are your dough expanding too much or tasting and smelling a bit sour, with an almost alcoholic aftertaste (the yeast produces alcohol as it ferments).

Can you refrigerate pizza dough after it rises? ›

At which point during the dough making process would it be best to freeze or refrigerate? You can refrigerate the dough after almost any step, but after the first rise (or a little before) works best. Store it, covered, in the refrigerator for 1-3* days. Allow room for the dough to expand as it will continue to rise.

Can you leave dough to rise overnight at room temperature? ›

Yes! If a recipe calls for proofing bread dough overnight in the refrigerator, it can be proofed on the counter at a warmer temperature for a shorter period. Rather than placing the dough in the refrigerator overnight, leave it covered on the counter for 1 to 4 hours until it's ready to bake.

How long to knead pizza dough in machine? ›

Turn the mixer to speed 2 and knead for 8 minutes. The dough should be smooth and spongy.

Can you open bread machine while kneading? ›

Speaking of adjusting, one common bread machine mistake is thinking the appliance is like a pressure cooker or blender and cannot be opened once it's on. Think again—it's actually a good idea to flip that lid and peek at the dough, especially about 10 minutes into the kneading stage.

Why is my breadmaker bread so dense and heavy? ›

Old or stale yeast. Expired yeast or moisture contaminated yeast will have trouble growing properly and this can lead to dense bread machine bread. Always relatively new yeast & store it in an airtight container.

What is the best flour to use when making pizza dough?

What flour is better for pizza? ›

Use Tipo 0 or Tipo 00 flour. Tipo is a grading of flour on the Italian flour scale. And these flours have just the right amount of protein content - around 12.5% for pizza baking.

What is the difference between bread flour and pizza flour? ›

Pizza Flour and bread flour are both made from wheat. But the difference in their hydration levels makes them ideal for different purposes. Bread flour has a higher hydration level than pizza flour, which facilitates a better rise. This means it will produce a moist dough that leads to a soft and chewy crust.
